Megan Shepherd Takes the Dare

Happy Friday!

Today I chose a dare from Jen Klein that goes something like this:

Choose a character from your upcoming book.  Reenact his/her most dramatic moment.  Use props and costumes if necessary.  Photograph and post.

I wouldn't say this is the MOST dramatic moment in my character's life, but it's pretty darn dramatic. And it required safety goggles and live fire.

Thanks for the dare, Jen! Next up on the blog is a guest dare by Mindi Scott on Tuesday, October 9, and then our own Mindy McGinnis will answer a truth or dare on October 12.

  1. I have to admit, I've always wanted to do that just to see how it feels, but then I think about having to clean-up after and don't :-D

    1. Or you could just do it at a friend's house, mwahaha...

  2. Haaaaa! That was funny. I love how the first time you did it with a slight English accent. I was going to ask you if your character was English but then takes 2 and 3 there was no accent. I also love how you slowed down and jumped back at the end of each throw. It was making me laugh so hard. That was an awesome dare, Megan. Seriously. I want to reenact a dramatic scene now. Why don't I have anyone smashing glass dramatically? I feel the need to write that into my next book just so I can reenact it. :)

    1. I flipped back through The Madman's Daughter, and it turns out people smash dish ware A LOT more than I remember in that book.

  3. This is amazing. I also like how you took the time to stuff a pillow in the window so that we'd better be able to see the glass-smashing :)

  4. This is awesome. What a great dare! There is a scene in Insomnia where he smashes a small trophy through a window...I wish windows weren't so expensive. ;-)

  5. Such awesomeness. It's been YEARS since I've broken anything on purpose. So breaking some wine glasses this weekend! :)

  6. I loved the slow motion replay at the end. Very cool, Megan. Here's something else I'd like to see in real life: someone shaking their fist in anger. People are always doing that in books and film...

    1. I legitimately shook my fist in anger once. It was at my sister's roommate's mother. Long story.

  8. Full disclosure: we had to clean out the fireplace anyway. So it was kind of the perfect opportunity for smashing things into it.

  9. Megan, I am cracking up right now. And so jealous. I need a fireplace and some dishes to break, stat.

  10. Haha. :) That was brilliant. Now I really really want to act out a dramatic moment in my MC's life. Though I think the biggest one involved killing someone, so that might not work out so well...

    1. Yes, you might not want to do the MOST dramatic moment :)

  11. I laugh at safety glasses! Ha! Ha! I'm an impetuous, spirited female who will give no quarter to a saucy little teacup!

  12. Ha! Megan, that was awesome. I love that you also decided to throw a wine glass, because smashing two teacups isn't enough.

It reminds me of this hospital safety video my mom brought home when I was a kid. It was called "MRI Safety: the Invisible Force," and it was nominally about how not to get injured by the MRI machine they had just installed at her hospital. In reality, whoever made the film got carried away chucking things at what is basically a giant magnet. They started out with small things you might accidentally carry into the room, like earrings and clipboards, but by the end they were throwing things that would never come near an MRI in a million years - like toilets and luggage.

  13. AH HA HA HA HA HAAAAAA!!!

I can't believe you did it. you rock!

  14. Megan, that was hilarious! I especially loved how you had to bend over a little to chuck it directly into the fire. My hearth is raised so it might be easier for me. Nice touch with the flute as well.
