Kasie West Takes the Dare

Yesterday, in a panic, I sent out a "I still have no idea what I'm going to do for my dare tomorrow" plea on twitter and was saved by the awesome Erin Bowman with:

I dare you to re-stage your cover. Blog the photo results. (You have bangs right? This should be easy ;) )

She was supported by Megan with:

   I SECOND THAT! :D

That's practically a double dog dare when two people support it, right?

Little did Erin know that my sister, Stephanie Ryan, and her husband, Kevin, are photoshop geniuses. So this dare was meant for me. Not only is my sister a photoshop genius (as you are about to witness) she is an amazing photographer. In fact, you should go 'like' her photography facebook page immediately: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Stephanie-Ryan-Photography/118147241572560?fref=ts

So here we go. My reenactment of my cover with ME as the subject:

Now you can see why a few people that know me in real life have done a small double take when looking at my real cover. Also, funny story, when my editor met me for the first time (my book cover in her possession, ready to be shared with me for the first time) she said, "I didn't know you had bangs." So I promise neither me nor my editor picked a cover model that bore a slight resemblance to me on purpose. Ha.

But that got me thinking, if I were to do a book cover to represent my own two possible futures and my own story. What would it look like? The following is probably pretty close. The future me on the left represents a life where I find balance. The future me on the right represents never leaving my precioussss writing chair again. :) Which fate am I going to choose?!?

I had to keep the "mock cover" disclaimer on this second picture as well just in case.

Thanks for the dare, Erin (and Megan). That was fun. And seriously, thanks Stephanie Ryan, you rock. Send in more truth or dares for us to choose from here. Up next week: Megan Shepherd.

  1. That gollum version will haunt me! O_O

You and Sarah J. Maas can start a group for authors everyone refuses to believe didn't model for their own covers. :-p

Loved Pivot Point so much, just fyi!

    1. Okay, so I just looked up Sarah J Maas and her cover--holy crap! She wins the prize. Hers is way closer than mine. That's crazy.

But yes, I think the gollum version will haunt me as well. lol And I'm so glad you loved Pivot Point. Thanks so much.

  2. AHA! Whoa, the resemblance you have with the cover model is unnerving. O_O Great job, though - and I'm pretty sure that everyone has their own 'Gollum'. (That cover will forever haunt me!)

    1. Ha. Everyone probably does have their own "Gollum" future, huh? I've never thought of that. :)

  3. BAHAHAhahahaha! LOVE this. I think you should make up the Gollum version and carry it to conferences with you. Put it up in front of you on the table and see what people have to say about it.

    Call it an experiment.

Stephanie is massively talented! :) And awesome.

    1. I totally should. And I should just set it in front of me like it's totally real and not say a word. Be like, "what?" Ha. That would be fun. Maybe my next dare??? :)

  4. So I knew you had blonde hair and bangs when I dared you to do this, but NEVER did I expect the results to be this convincing. Holy crap. (And that Gollum one is a real stunner too. Wanted to be sure I mentioned that... ;) )

    1. I know, right? When my sister was done, I said: Uh....I think we need to put "mock cover" on there so I don't see this floating around the web as my book cover. Ha.

  5. That Gollum cover is fine art. Rich with symbolism and pathos. A stunning, avant-garde representation of your theme. Brilliant.

(Seriously though, I laughed so hard when I saw this that my husband gave me a weird look.)

    1. So should I turn it in for a fine art contest? Is that what you're saying. Along with a thousand word essay on its symbolism. :)

  6. Yep, second Renee. And that is crazy how much you look like your real cover model! Your sister is amazingly talented. Erin you're a genius for coming up with this dare!

  7. Wow, your whole family is so talented! And yes, what an awesome dare. We should resurrect it again sometime.

    1. I agree. We need more people in the group to model for their own covers. It's funny.

  8. That is really uncanny! How much you look like the cover model, not Gollum :)

  9. Holy crap, that is insane. I've had quite a few people ask me if the girl on my KEEPER cover was drawn from a pic of me as a kid--since they think it looks like me. But that is very much NOT the case. I was so not that cute as a kid.

Also, the Gollum cover is AWESOME. Love!

    1. Yeah, I can see why people would ask you that. I've had a lot of people do double takes when they see my cover so I just say: No, not me.

  10. KASIE. I honestly had to compare your first mock cover with the real one on the sidebar because I didn't see the difference. Just . . . WHAT? I love this!

  12. And I thought the model on the cover was Emma Stone, but now I'm sure it's you.

I mean. It has to be. It can't not be.

It's either you or Emma Stone. Anything else is implausible and quite honestly impossible. Unless each of you have a doppelganger. If you do, consult with Elsie Chapman - she should know what to do.

Also, to go with your second mock-up cover: http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/418533_407957235887785_2013196047_n.jpg

    RELEVANT.

    1. Okay, I was going to make some sort of comment about your comment and then I went and looked at the link you included and now I'm too scared to remember what I was going to say.

  13. DUDE!!! You and Sara J. Maas have the same "I'm hot and look like my cover model" thing going. SO UNFAIR
